Cloud and Mobile Computing – 2 Tech Trends to Watch (Part II)

Mobile computing

Mobile computing is connected at the hip with the cloud. The two drive one another: the more people carry smartphones and the cheaper cloud computing becomes, the more computing will be done remotely via smartphone or tablet. This will drive further cost declines in cloud computing which in turn will lead to further increases in the number of people using smartphones and other mobile computing devices.

Mobile computing could create a seismic shift that I expect will take 15–20 years to play out. Location-enabled apps can buzz friends when friends are within a certain distance of one another. Search for pizza online and not only can your phone find out where you are, it can furnish you with reviews of three restaurants nearby. In the future, it could also instantly run an auction to see which owner wants to offer you the greatest discount to get your business. In a flash, you’d be notified of the winner, and given directions to get there.

In light of competition strategy, companies that provide successful platforms end up controlling an ecosystem—the success of the platform incentivizes other companies to write applications to the platform that in turn increase the value of the entire ecosystem in a self-reinforcing trend.
